Loose dogs are one of the main obstacles to the breeding of the Kentish Plover. The damp depressions located on the inner edge of the beach, which are particularly favourable for nesting and feeding chicks, are also areas frequently used by off-leash dogs. To reduce this pressure, we have experimentally developed a semi-permeable barrier: it allows plovers to pass through but prevents dogs from accessing the area. The barrier was installed on Can Sopa beach on 4th June 2026, and the initial results have been very positive. One month later, on 4th July, we were able to observe a Kentish Plover chick in the area, photographed again on 7th July. This result demonstrates the potential effectiveness of a simple solution that allows for the coexistence of public beach use and wildlife protection. From the campsites, we continue to promote concrete measures to actively contribute to the conservation of the Kentish Plover.
